Lush cannas in the garden are becoming increasingly popular. By dividing the roots in early spring, the decorative plant originating from India can be reproduced excellently.

Split cannabis root for plant propagation

The multiplication of a canna by root division is usually used most often because it is quite promising.

When winter gradually comes to an end and hesitantly passes on its baton to spring, it is time to plan and organize the blooming for the garden in summer. In recent years, the decorative canna (Indian flower tube) has become increasingly popular for hobby gardeners.
It can also be multiplied very well.

Split the roots in spring

In early spring, when the temperatures are above freezing, get the tuber (rhizome) out of its dark and cool wintering area. The tuber is now carefully cut into pieces, each of which should have one to three buds.
Then put the pieces immediately in a pot with moist potting soil. The fresh tubers should not be watered yet.

Excessively wet conditions cause rotting

Since there are no roots on the nodules intended for propagation, they only tolerate so much water that their soil does not dry out. Without roots, they are not able to absorb water themselves, so there is a risk of putrefaction in the wet. After a short preliminary cultivation, the tubers can be planted out.

Plant outdoors after the frost period

After planting out, the respective sections of the canna bulb develop into a new plant. As a rule, this then increases very quickly. However, you should make sure that the canna is only set outdoors after the frost period. The correct planting depth is at a depth that corresponds to two or three times the diameter of the root bulb in question. The distance of the plants from one another is usually sufficient to cover half the growth range of the canna.
