Gravel elements are becoming increasingly popular in the garden. Because you can use gravel as a design element as well as plain and simple as a road surface.

But a gravel path does not only make a lot of looks. It is also easy to put on and without any machines. Even laypeople can do it. On top of that, it is an inexpensive alternative to paved and paved paths. You can also let off steam in terms of design. This means that you can lay the path straight or curved as you like and also of different widths. There are no limits to your imagination or taste.

You need:

Tool:

  • Embroider
  • Maurer cord
  • spirit level
  • spade
  • laying hammer
  • shovel
  • compressor

Material:

  • Edging stones
  • round palisades
  • Frost protection gravel (grain size 0/32)
  • Mineral mixture / recycling gravel (grain size 16/32)
  • garden fleece
  • gravel

Step by step instructions

❶ Before you start the route, you must of course first plan the route. Should the path be straight or swing? Once the decision is made, you have to mark the course with the help of embroidery and masonry cord. Make sure that you have to bring the masonry cord to the level of the upper edge of the path with the spirit level.

❷ Now you have to pick up the spade and cut the floor along the masonry cord. Then dig out the path surface about 20 centimeters deep.

❸ So that the path does not later spread out on the surrounding lawn, you must now dig in lawn edging stones as a lateral boundary and drive in with the laying hammer. Always check whether the stones are aligned exactly vertically. Where curves are planned, you should use round palisades.

❹ Now you have to fill up half of the way with the frost protection gravel and compact everything well. On top of that comes a 10 centimeter thick layer of mineral mixture / recycling ballast. Pay attention to a gradient of up to 2 percent to avoid water build-up. Then compact the layer again.

❺ Then lay the weed fleece so that grass and weeds cannot later grow through the new gravel path.

❻ Now you can put the actual gravel or grit on top of it. The gravel or split layer should have a thickness of about 5 centimeters. The layer must be spread to just below the edge of the turf stone.
