When autumn is in full swing, the apples will also be harvested. But where to put all the apples? After all, you can't eat or process them all right away.

Apples are best stored in wooden boxes

Apples can generally be stored very well and are therefore long-lasting. You only have to follow a few rules when storing. Depending on the variety, they then last until spring. However, one thing should be said in advance: not all types of apple are suitable for long storage. Especially the very early apple varieties such as the Klarapfel, Alkmene and Gravensteiner are not suitable for long storage. They even have to be processed a few days after harvest.

How to store apples correctly

❶ Harvest apples:

In order for apples to last a long time, you have to consider a few things when harvesting:

➜ You should only ever harvest apples if they pass the “tilt test”. That means: the stem easily detaches from the branch, if you turn the apple 90 degrees, it is ready for picking. The stem should always remain on the apple.

➜ Only harvest the apples in dry weather, because the apples are sensitive to pressure in high humidity. If the sun shines very strongly, then let the apples cool down before storing them.

➜ You should generally not squeeze the apples too much when harvesting. Otherwise they will rot faster later.

❷ Examine apples:

Before storing, you should examine the apples carefully and sort out sick and damaged ones as well as those without a stem. If you can find drill holes on an apple, you should sort them out. The holes come from the apple wrapper, which bores into the meat, eats it and leaves its droppings. You must then dispose of such infested apples. Apples with brown spots should also be sorted out or eaten straight away. This is apple scab or speckledness that can also be transferred to other fruits. Falling fruit and lightly infested apples can be processed into applesauce.

❸ Store apples:

Now it is a matter of storing the apples correctly. This is best done in wooden boxes because you can store the apples dry and cool. You can also store the apples in a modern way. Namely in plastic bags. The big producers do the same. Simply put the apples in plastic bags (not too many on top of each other) that you have previously provided with a few small holes. Connect well.

Unheated storage rooms or the cellar are ideal for storing the apples. You need a storage temperature of 8 degrees.

❹ Check apples regularly:

Of course, you also have to check the stored apples regularly. After all, some apples can start to rot after they have been stored. Initially, you should check the apples once a week. Later, if you check on them every two to three weeks, it's enough.

Important: Store apples separately from other types of fruit

Do you not only want to store apples, but also other types of fruit? Then you should not store the apples together with the other fruit. Apples release the ripening gas ethylene, which in turn ensures that the other types of fruit ripen faster.
