You have to take care of roses all year round

Wonderfully blooming roses in the garden require year-round care. And with just a little bit of effort during the individual seasons, almost every gardener can achieve a full bouquet of roses. Here are 9 tips for caring for the roses.

"Roses in the spring

Tip 1 - remove winter protection:
In spring, the roses wake up from their hibernation. And after the rose bushes are normally covered with a winter protection or heavily piled up with earth, this protection can also be removed after the frost days. Do not remove winter protection in direct sun, otherwise the roses will be surprised by the sudden warmth and react very sensitively on cool nights.

Tip 2 - remove frozen shoots:
Furthermore, the shoots on the roses that may still be frozen in winter should be carefully cut off. Then remove the clippings cleanly and dispose of them in the bin, as this can lead to diseases on the plants.

Tip 3 - fertilize roses:
The growth phase that then begins can be excellently supported by fertilizing the individual rose plants. For roses it is advisable to fertilize very early (around the beginning of April) with organic fertilizer such as Compost and later fertilization in May (mid to end of the month) with special rose fertilizer available from specialist dealers. Both fertilizers must be easily worked into the soil of the rose plants and then watered well. In this way you loosen the soil around the roses accordingly.

"Roses in the summer

Tip 4 - water roses:
On hot summer days, the roses are watered vigorously either in the morning or in the evening. The roses should only be watered in the ground area, directly on the stick. Never water roses from above as this can lead to fungal infections. Rose petals already infected with fungal infections should be removed regularly and disposed of in the bin.

Tip 5 - cut roses:
Roses blooming several times a year must be cut back after each withered bloom. This process is carried out with special rose scissors below the first, multi-feathered leaf stand of the withered rose blossom. However, once a year blooming roses you should not cut back after withering, but let rosehips start. This makes the rose tree look prettier.

Tip 6 - fertilize roses:
And even in summer, roses tolerate fertilization. Again, you can work with compost, so-called organic fertilizer, immediately after the first flowering. And at the end of July or beginning of August the rose fertilizer can be used again. In both cases, loosen the soil around the rose bush so that sufficient moisture can seep through to the roots at all times.

"Roses in the Fall

Tip 7 - remove withered flowers:
In autumn the blooms of roses have withered and must be removed thoroughly. Also, the roses must not be fertilized at this time of year. Because strong expulsion due to fertilizer would inevitably lead to frostbite in winter.

Tip 8 - plant new rose bushes:
In addition, new rose bushes are planted in autumn, which also do not require fertilization. However, roses must be watered well when set!

"Roses in winter

Tip 9 - winterize roses:
Depending on the onset of winter, sometimes even in late autumn, the roses have to be put into hibernation. The individual sticks are protected by being piled up well with garden soil and / or pine branches. On top of that, a special rose protection can be wrapped around it, as is often offered in garden centers. Some noble rose varieties are still very sensitive to frost despite the winter protection described above and should therefore also be covered with a breathable jute sack - easy to bind to the stem. Jute bags can even be filled with leaves, which protects the roses even better.
